50 State Quarters
The 50 State Quarters Program from the US Mint is a celebration of the 50 states. From 1999 to 2008 the Mint is releasing one new quarter approximately every 10 weeks. Each quarter's reverse side honors the history, traditions, and symbols of one US state. The quarters are being released in the order that the states ratified the Constitution and joined the Union.
Below are the quarters that were released from 1999 to 2007, with some details about each one.

2007 US State Quarters
 Montana Montana, "Big Sky Country," chose to feature a dramatic buffalo skull on its quarter. This symbol is sacred to many of Montana's American Indian tribes and commonly used around the state. |
 Washington "The Evergreen State" quarter highlight's Washington's natural resources and beauty with a king salmon breaching the water in front of Mount Rainier. |
 Idaho Idaho's quarter has the inscriptions "Esto Perpetua" — "May it be Forever" — and the Peregrine Falcon, which was once endangered but is now flying again throughout Idaho. |
 WY Wyoming is the "Equality State" because it was the first territory to allow women to vote, serve on juries and hold public office. The bucking horse and rider symbolize Wyoming's Wild West heritage. |
 Utah In 1869 the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads met in Utah to complete the transcontinental railroad. Utah's coin features this historic event and its role as the "Crossroads of the West" with a symbolic golden railroad spike. |
2006 US State Quarters
 Nevada Nevada has more than half of America's wild horses. This coin features three of them, a sun rise over snowy mountains, sagebrush, and a banner for "The Silver State." |
 Nebraska The Nebraska coin has an ox-drawn covered wagon carrying pioneers and Chimney Rock in the North Platte River valley. The sun is in full view behind the wagon. |
 Colorado Colorado's quarter depicts the Rocky Mountains with evergreens and the inscription "Colorful Colorado." |
 North Dakota The ND quarter features grazing buffalo with a sunset view of the buttes and canyons that help define North Dakota's Badlands. |
 South Dakota The "Mount Rushmore State" quarter features an image of the State bird (Chinese ring-necked pheasant) in flight above the famous stone faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The design is bordered by heads of wheat. |
2005 US State Quarters
 California California means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. After many stages of review Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger made the final decision and chose to highlight California's natural heritage. The quarter depicts naturalist and conservationist John Muir admiring Yosemite Valley's "Half Dome" and includes a soaring California condor. |
 Minnesota Minnesota has more lakes than any other US state. Its quarter features a tree-lined lake with people fishing, a loon, and an outline of the state with the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" moniker inside it. The name Minnesota is actually derived from a Native American (Dakota Sioux) word for "cloudy water." |
 Oregon The Oregon state quarter shows Crater Lake along with its Wizard Island and surrounding peaks. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States and Crater Lake National Park is one of our nation's first protected areas. |
 Kansas The Sunflower State's quarter features a buffalo and a small batch of sunflowers, the state animal and the state flower. Tens of thousands of buffalo roamed freely across the Kansas plains when the state was founded in 1861. |
 West Virginia West Virginia chose to put an image of the New River and the New River Gorge Bridge on its quarter. This does more than illustrate the state's natural beauty. The bridge is an engineering triumph. It is the world's largest steel span and the second highest bridge in the US. |
2004 US State Quarters
 Michigan Michigan's quarter depicts the outline of the "Great Lakes State" nestled inside the lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario. Michigan is the only State that borders four of the five Great Lakes. |
 Florida The Florida state quarter features two very different "Gateway to Discovery" images (along with that motto): the space shuttle Discovery and a Spanish galleon. In the 16th Century, Ponce de Leon, Hernando de Soto, and other Spaniards were the first Europeans to explore the North American mainland through their ventures into Florida. In the 20th Century, Florida's Kennedy Space center launched the space shuttles into orbit. |
 Texas The Lone Star State is celebrated with an outline of the state and the famous lone star from the state flag. Interestingly, Texas is the only US state to have had six different national flags fly over it: Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, Confederate States of America and the United States of America. |
 Iowa Iowa chose to base their quarter on an iconic painting by Iowan Grant Wood that depicts Midwestern small-town life. Significatly, it includes a schoolhouse and the inscription "Foundation in Education" to mark Iowa's long-time commitment to education. |
 Wisconsin Wisconsin cheeseheads rejoice! Wisconsin's quarter makes it clear that this is the dairy state. Wisconsin's 17,000+ dairy farms help produce over 350 varieties of cheese. One of its nearly one million cows is depicted on the quarter, along with a head of cheese, an ear of corn, and the state motto "Forward." |
2003 US State Quarters
 Illinois The Illinois quarter depicts Abraham Lincoln plus a farm scene and the Chicago skyline. Twenty-one stars line the coin, signifying Illinois as the 21st state to be admitted into the Union. |
 Alabama The Alabama quarter has an image of the blind and deaf heroine Helen Keller with her name in English and braille. Long leaf pines and magnolias grace the sides, and a "Spirit of Courage" banner underlines the central image. |
 Maine Celebrating the state's maritime heritage, the Maine quarter features its maritime history with the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, built in 1826, and a schooner. |
 Missouri The Missouri quarter depicts Lewis and Clark's historic return to St. Louis in 1806 down the Missouri River, with the Gateway Arch in the background. The quarter is inscribed "Corps of Discovery 1804-2004." |
 Arkansas The "Natural State" is celebrated with images of rice stalks (for the first commercially successful rice crop), a diamond (for the Crater of Diamonds State Park), and a mallard (for its popular sport of hunting) on the Arkansas state quarter. |
2002 US State Quarters
 Tennessee Tennessee celebrates the state's contributions to our nation's musical heritage on its quarter. The fiddle represents the Appalachian music of east Tennessee, the trumpet stands for the blues of west Tennessee for which Memphis is famous, and the guitar is for central Tennessee, home to Nashville, the capital of country music. |
 Ohio The Ohio quarter honors the state's contribution to the history of aviation, depicting an early aircraft and an astronaut. History-making astronauts Neil Armstrong and John Glenn were both born in Ohio, as was Orville Wright, co-inventor of the airplane. |
 Louisiana On the Louisiana quarter is displayed an image of the state bird, the pelican, a trumpet with musical notes, and the outline of the Louisiana Purchase territory. Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon Bonaparte in 1803 for $15 million. Dubbed the "greatest real estate deal in history" the Louisiana Purchase added thirteen new states to the Union, nearly doubling its size and making it one of the largest countries in the world. |
 Indiana The Indiana quarter represents the state pride in the famous Indianapolis 500 race. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a 2.5 mile track built in 1909 for automotive research purposes. While the track was and is used for research, it is best known for hosting auto races, most famously, the Indy 500. |
 Mississippi Showcased on the Mississippi quarter is the beauty and elegance of the state flower, with the inscription "The Magnolia State." The magnolia is strongly associated with the South where the flower became enormously popular after it was introduced from Asia. |
2001 US State Quarters
 New York The New York quarter, the first quarter of the 2001 series, features the Statue of Liberty superimposed over an outline of the state along with the inscription "Gateway to Freedom." Also incorporated into the state outline is a line tracing the Hudson River and the route of the Erie Canal. |
 North Carolina North Carolina highlights the famous 1903 photograph of the "First Flight" on its quarter. For obvious reasons, North Carolina choose to commemorate the historic feat that took place on December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina with the first successful flight of a heavier-than-air, self-propelled flying machine. |
 Rhode Island The Rhode Island quarter honors the "Ocean State." Featuring a vintage sailboat gliding through Rhode Island's famous Narragansett Bay, and an image of the Pell Bridge in the background, with the design showcasing Rhode Island's most popular sport—sailing. |
 Vermont The picturesque Camel's Hump Mountain is in the background of the Vermont quarter with an image of maple trees with sap buckets in the foreground. Until the 1800s when cane sugar was introduced, Americans relied on Vermont's maple sugar for much of its sugar supply. |
 Kentucky The Kentucky quarter shows the stately mansion, Federal Hill, where Stephen Foster wrote the state song, "My Old Kentucky Home." A thoroughbred racehorse is positioned behind a fence in the foreground. Kentucky is home of the longest running annual horse race in the country, the Kentucky Derby. |
2000 US State Quarters
 Massachusetts The Massachusetts quarter features a design of "The Minuteman," a famous statue in Concord, Massachusetts. The Minutemen played a big role in protecting our nation, as they rallied together to help defeat the British during the Revolutionary War. These small, influential forces consisting of regular farmers and colonists were always ready to assemble and fight on a minute's notice. |
 Maryland The striking dome of the Maryland Statehouse is featured on its quarter. This distinctive building dates back to 1772. From 1783-1784, the Maryland Statehouse served as the nation's first peacetime capital. The Treaty of Paris was ratified here, officially ending the Revolutionary War. |
 South Carolina South Carolina's quarter shows key state symbols: a Palmetto Tree, the Carolina Wren, and the Yellow Jessamine. An outline of South Carolina, the nickname "The Palmetto State" and a star indicating the capital, Columbia, form the quarter's background. The importance of the Palmetto Tree dates back to the Revolutionary War. In 1776, colonists in a small fort built of Palmetto logs successfully defeated a British fleet trying to capture Charleston Harbor. |
 New Hampshire The New Hampshire quarter honors what was one of the state's most unique natural attractions, "The Old Man of the Mountain" and features the state motto, "Live free or die." "The Old Man of the Mountain" is a rock formation that could be found on Mt. Cannon in the Franconia Notch gateway to Northern New Hampshire. Sadly, the rock formation recently collapsed. |
 Virginia Virginia honors Jamestown, our nation's first permanent English settlement, on its quarter. Jamestown turns 400 years old in 2007. The selected design features the three ships, Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery, that brought the first English settlers. |
1999 US State Quarters
 Delaware The Delaware quarter depicts the historic horseback ride of Caesar Rodney, a delegate to the Continental Congress. On July 1, 1776, despite suffering from asthma and cancer, Rodney set off on the 80-mile journey to Philadelphia withstanding thundershowers and a severe summer heat wave. The next day, he arrived at Independence Hall just in time to cast the deciding vote in favor of our nation's independence. |
 Pennsylvania Pennsylvania's quarter depicts the statue "Commonwealth," an outline of the state, the state motto, and a keystone. At a Jefferson Republican victory rally in October 1802, Pennsylvania was toasted as "the keystone in the federal union." |
 New Jersey The New Jersey quarter depicts General George Washington and members of the Colonial Army crossing the Delaware River Christmas night in 1776. Using surprise as their greatest weapon, Washington's army captured over 900 prisoners and secured the town of Trenton, NJ. The design is based on the 1851 painting by Emmanuel Leutze, "Washington Crossing the Delaware." |
 Georgia Several symbols are incorporated into the Georgia quarter. It prominently features the peach -- a symbol long associated with the state -- within the confines of a silhouetted outline of the state. Live Oak sprigs border the central design paying homage to the official state tree, the Live Oak. The state motto hangs on a banner across the design: "Wisdom, Justice, Moderation." |
 Connecticut The Connecticut quarter features "The Charter Oak." On the night of October 31, 1687, Connecticut's Charter was put to a test. A British representative for King James II, challenged Connecticut's government structure and demanded its surrender. In the middle of the heated discussion, the Connecticut Charter vanished. Heroic Captain Joseph Wadsworth saved the Charter and concealed it in the safest place he could find -- in a majestic white oak. |
